The Connectivity Checklist for Businesses Taking Card Payments

A card machine is only as reliable as the connection behind it, and most businesses never actually check what that connection is doing until it fails mid-transaction.
Four things worth checking this week, none of which take longer than ten minutes.
First: does your payment device have a backup connection path, or does it rely on a single SIM and a single network? If that network has a bad day, so does every transaction you try to process.
Second: where''s the device physically located? Signal strength drops behind metal shelving, thick walls, and basement or semi-enclosed counters more than most business owners expect. A device that works fine near the door might struggle at a till twenty metres further in.
Third: what happens during load shedding? A device that needs a powered router to reach the internet is only as reliable as your backup power setup. A device running on its own SIM connection sidesteps that dependency entirely.
Fourth: do you actually know your provider''s average resolution time when something goes wrong? Not the marketing promise, the actual number. If nobody''s ever asked, that''s worth finding out before a Saturday afternoon outage forces the question.
None of these are expensive fixes. Most are a five-minute conversation with whoever supplies your payment device. The businesses that never lose a sale to a connectivity hiccup aren''t the ones with the newest hardware, they''re the ones who checked these four things before they became a problem.
Which of these four have you actually tested in the last six months?
