What a Day of Network Downtime Actually Costs Your Business

"99% uptime" sounds like a strong number until you translate it into real time: it works out to roughly three full days of downtime a year. In 2026, that''s not something to be proud of, it''s a liability most businesses haven''t priced in properly.

For a South African SME, a single serious internet outage costs an average of R223,000 in lost revenue and missed opportunities. Multiply that across a year of smaller outages and near-misses, and the total can eclipse the entire annual IT budget.

Most business owners know the feeling: load-shedding ends, the power comes back, but the network takes another twenty minutes to stabilise, and that''s twenty minutes of stalled momentum for the whole team. Or worse, a Fibre line drops during a tender submission with a deadline that doesn''t care about your ISP''s outage.

A more resilient setup rests on three things:

  • Redundancy: Fibre as your backbone, LTE/5G as the lifeline when it goes down
  • Managed services: a connectivity partner running the infrastructure, so you''re not also acting as your own IT department
  • Fast hardware turnaround: a real plan for repairing or replacing phones and laptops within 24 hours, not "whenever we get to it"

Connectivity isn''t a utility you can treat like electricity or water. It''s the infrastructure your growth actually depends on.

If downtime like this sounds familiar, it''s worth auditing what it''s actually costing you before it becomes the norm.
